Liberty Street ready to rock

June 29, 2012
By BRIAN FERRY (bferry@timesobserver.com) , The Times Observer

It's time again for Liberty Rocks - part street concert, part gathering place.

From 4 to 11 p.m. next Tuesday, July 3, Liberty Rocks returns for its second year on Liberty Street with music, food and vendors for friends and family to see what downtown Warren has to offer.

The event will take up Liberty Street from Second Avenue to Third Avenue, with the bands setting up in front of the dogwood in Liberty Park.

"We have great bands and food along with beer this year," Warren Main Street Coordinator Pamela McGarry said. "We are looking forward to a nice downtown event to kick off the Fourth of July holiday."

Among the acts lined up to play throughout the day are Earth Angel, Old Dawg Bluegrass, Haunted Heart, Akoostikly Challenged, Black John, and Pat Hackett's Tsunami of Sound.

Samples of the bands can be heard on the Warren Pa. Main Street Facebook page. "It's a nice mix of music - all pleasant to listen to, should appeal to people of all ages, whether you're 60 or 16." McGarry said. "It's a really diverse assortment of music."

The first five bands will be on for about an hour each, McGarry said. Tsunami of Sound, a group of 24 current and former Warren County residents, will perform for about three hours. Despite their geographic separation, the members of the band have been working on their music and practicing for the concert since the inaugural event last year.

Although some chairs and tables will be provided for diners, those looking to enjoy the music are encouraged to bring chairs.

The list of vendors put out by Main Street includes food from Top of the Line Catering and Shooters BBQ, possibly some pizza brought in by Warren Main Street, drinks by Sugar Grove Volunteer Fire Department and Main Street, and merchandise by Images by Jer. McGarry did not have a full list of merchandise vendors for the event, but stressed that several businesses will be open during Liberty Rocks.

Sikxgun Choppers and the SGC Hometown Heroes will bring a custom bike to the event and sell tickets for this year's Thank-a-Vet Dam Run custom bike raffle - Warrior II.

"We just wanted to create a fun time in the downtown," McGarry said. "July third is a big night out. Liberty Rocks can be one of the stops."

While the music will be the main draw for many, the possibility of meeting up with old friends should also bring people to the event.

"The concept of this event is to provide a meeting place for people of all ages to connect with local and out-of-town friends on the eve of the best holiday in Warren - the Fourth of July," McGarry said. "Pat Hackett, who now resides in Burbank, Calif., along with Warren residents Jeanne Berry and Darren Lobdell came up with the concept."

It's a sort of informal reunion.

"The visionaries that created it wanted to have a place where you could go and be relatively assured that ... you know you're going to run into these people," McGarry said.
