JAMESTOWN, N.Y. - The night started well for the Jamestown Jammers but the Williamsport Crosscutters ruined the evening, scoring seven unanswered runs after falling down 3-0, to defeat the Jammers in a rain-shortened game on Thursday night at Diethrich Park.
After starter Drew Steckenrider held the Crosscutters scoreless through the first two frames, the Jammers offense broke through in the bottom of the second.
Felix Munoz shot a line drive to left for a single with out out. Anthony Gomez followed Munoz with a single to center. Munoz was thrown out trying to advance on the play but Gomez made it safely to second on the throw.
After a Cody Keefer walk, Sharif Othman doubled to left, bringing home Gomez and Keefer. Cameron Flynn followed Othman and laced a single to right, bringing Othman home and staking the Jammers to a three run lead.
But the lead wouldn't last as Williamsport scratched a run home in the top of the third. Kyle Hoppy singled, moved to second on a walk, went to third on a ground out and scored on a passed ball by Othman.
The Crosscutter tied the game up the following inning. Chace Numata and Logan Moore both walked with one out, signaling the end of the day for Steckenrider. Beau Wright was called in from the 'pen and uncorked a wild pitch that allowed the runners to move to second and third. Gustavo Gonzalez brought Numata home on a sacrifice fly. Moore moved to third on an infield single by Tyler Green and scored on another wild pitch by Wright.
The Crosscutters took the lead in the top of the fifth on a one out homerun by Cameron Perkins, his first of the year, off of Wright and extended the lead in the top of the sixth, scoring three more runs.
After leadoff singles by Numata and Moore, Gustavo Gonzalez walked, loading the bases for Hoppy. Wright issued a walk to Hoppy, bringing Numata home. Moore came across on a ground out by Zack Taylor and Gonzalez then scored on a wild pitch by Wright.
A lead-off single by Matt Juengel in the bottom of the sixth was the only hit the Jammers could muster after their three-run third before the game was called after seven and a half innings.
Othman had the Jammers lone extra base hit on the night as the Jammers managed just six hits.
Jonathan Musser (1-4) secured the win by tossing three innings of one hit relief, striking out three without issuing any walks.
Drew Steckenrider walked six in 3 and 1/3 but only allowed one hit and two runs. The loss went to Beau Wright (1-4), who gave up four hits and four runs in two and 2/3 innings, walking two and striking out a pair.
The Jammers fall to 21-29 with the loss. The conclusion of the brief two game series with Williamsport concludes Friday night at Diethrich Park. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
