A Sunday event harkened back to the 1950s in Elk Township – an antique tractor parade.

Hosted by Doug and Diane Hastings on the lawn of their farm on Scandia Road, the parade featured 16 local antique tractors followed by a picnic.

“It turned out to be so successful, it is likely to become a tradition at Scandia Corners,” Julie Boozer with the Elk Township Historical Society, said. “To the older citizens, it was reminiscent of the farm parades held in the 1950s as part of Elk Township Homecoming activities.”

The tractors lined up at the farm and headed north on Scandia Road before turning around at Roper Hollow Road.

“At this intersection, the heavens opened up to thoroughly douse every tractor and driver with a vigorous rainfall, but it did not dampen their spirits and a good time was had by all on the return trip to the Hastings farm,” Boozer said. ” A sumptuous picnic dinner and served on the lawn at their vintage wooden barn and lively conversation was an effective way to dry off and warm up.”

Vintage tractors included 1930s and 1940s models by Cockshutt, Farmall, John Deere, Massey Harris, Allis Chalmers and Ford.

“Doug and Diane Hastings would like to thank everyone who participated in the tractor parade especially the owners and drivers, as well as the Scandia Store and the Elk Township Historical Society for their support,” Boozer said. “They look forward to making this an annual event.”
