The Trickle - Mayans and others
December 19, 2012 - Brian Ferry
So, the world is supposed to end on Friday.
I'm not too concerned about that.
I haven't quit my job (if you know anybody that quit a really good job with not-too-demanding qualifications because they don't want to work during the last few days of life on earth, let me know). I've bought gifts (if you know anyone who's giving away all their stuff in a last-ditch effort to win good-deed points before the end of the world, let me know, I probably don't want ALL their stuff, but I'll gladly pick and choose). I scheduled some maintenance on my vehicle (if youknow anyone who's giving away their vehicles because they won't be around to enjoy them or because the internal combustion engine will no longer work in a few days, let me know).
I just can't imagine the Mayans, despite their many astounding technological advances, were THAT good. If they were that good at predictions, they should have looked to their own problems with the arrival of the Europeans and all that instead.
However, I believe our society is pretty advanced. If anyone should be predicting the end of the world based on the seemingly arbitrary end of a calendar, it should be we (although our language is pretty dumb sometimes).
To that end (not the dumb language thing), I think I'll quit my job next week and enjoy the last few days until the day on which all of the calendars in my house and at my desk at work end. What finality. All of them agree.
So, watch out world. Assuming we make it through the next three days, my calendar seems to show nothingness approaches after Dec. 31, 2012.
