The Trickle - CAT

July 2, 2013 - Brian Ferry

It was Cultural Awakening Tuesday.

It had been a while. Thanks to some leftovers from a celebratory feast held last week at Scout Camp, the reporting staff was able to partake of a meal that met the requirements of a Cultural Awakening.

While curiosities from emu to bugs are on our list, a native mammal species was on the menu today.

Buck teeth, big, flat tail.

I don't know the rules about taking and eating these creatures, but if my sources are accurate, the meat provided came from a beaver and is, presumably, legal.

It was heavily seasoned and tenderized. I'm not sure I could even say what the meat tasted like. If I had to hazard an opinion, it tasted like heavily seasoned meat. I'd say it was closer to roast beef than any other meat source I remember having.

Some of the comments from the other reporters: "Salty." "Not bad." "I tasted the seasoning rather than the meat."

Goat was next on our list, and we hear we can pick it up locally, but none of us has volunteered to get up early on a Saturday and run into town.

We'll see. Maybe our beaver experience will lead to a "Summer of Awakening."

Or, maybe it'll be several more months until I can write a blog, much less one about eating some kind of unusual food.
