The Trickle - Skipping Stones
August 3, 2013 - Brian Ferry
That's right. I've been practicing for the stone skipping tournament.
The Rock In River Festival (and Pennsylvania State Qualifying Stone Skipping Tournament) in Franklin is right around the corner - Saturday, Aug. 24.
So, for all of those folks who wondered why I didn't tell you about the thing in advance last year (aside from I'd never been there before, I didn't know if I should recommend it as a family event, I don't typically tell people about stuff that's outside of Warren County), that's your advance notice.
It's a good time.
There are events for kids. There is stone skipping for kids. There is stone skipping for adults who want to be kids. There is stone skipping for adults who are very serious about stone skipping.
There is chicken.
For the best stone skippers (by count, not distance) there is fudge.
If you're looking for something fun and different, think about it.
If you want to see some of the best stone skippers in the world (seriously), including current world record holder Russ Byars and former record holder Kurt "Mountain Man" Steiner, check it out.
Need a place to practice? I've found the stone selection and water at the confluence of Mathews Run and Brokenstraw Creek to be excellent.
If you want to challenge me, I'd suggest you warm up. I'm planning to better my result (23) from last year and maybe even beat a particular nine-year-old.
Byars and Steiner can wait. I'm gunning for Ferry.
