Pa. braces for gov't shutdown; parks would close

September 27, 2013
Associated Press

The threat of a partial government shutdown looms over Pennsylvania.

The Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and other historical attractions in Philadelphia will close next week unless the budget impasse in Washington is resolved, while tens of thousands of federal workers who live and work in the state face the prospect of furlough.

The Democratic-led Senate approved legislation Friday that would prevent government agencies from shutting their doors next week. But the bill faces an uncertain fate in the GOP-controlled House.

State officials say they're confident that Pennsylvania can weather a partial, temporary shutdown of the federal government with minimal disruption.
