PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Police say a 37-year-old man has died of his injuries from being shot in a Philadelphia subway concourse after an attempted robbery across from City Hall.

Investigators said two men approached a group of friends who had stopped to take pictures at the city's famous Love Park shortly after 2:30 a.m. Tuesday and announced a robbery.

Chief Inspector Scott Small says the group fled into the entrance to the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority concourse, but the would-be robbers pursued them into the stairwell, where at least eight shots were fired.

The injured man was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital, where he died after undergoing emergency surgery. His name was not being immediately released.

The two suspects fled. Police said they will be examining surveillance video to try to identify them.
