HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa. (AP) — A Republican lawmaker from central Pennsylvania is calling it quits after a long career in the state House.

Blair County state Rep. Jerry Stern says he won't run for re-election next year. Stern, of Martinsburg, Blair County, is in his 22nd year in the General Assembly.

He tells the Altoona Mirror ( ) he prayed about the decision.

Stern says he's on the waiting list for a liver transplant, but also isn't running because of the changing atmosphere in politics that puts too much emphasis on political fundraising.

Stern says he'll meet soon with his transplant doctors at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. His liver is failing because it's saturated with iron caused by a form of anemia. Stern is 58.
