Police: Noise provoked Pa. double-murder, suicide

GREENSBURG, Pa. (AP) — State police say a western Pennsylvania man who fatally shot his upstairs neighbors before killing himself at an apartment complex was apparently provoked by an ongoing dispute over noise.

Troopers say 51-year-old Philip Cancilla was found dead in his Hempfield Heights apartment on Wednesday afternoon.

On Thursday, Police held a news conference at their barracks in nearby Greensburg to detail the carnage.

They say Cancilla ambushed 23-year-old Christina White and 30-year-old Timothy Reffner as they carried laundry out of the complex about 7 a.m.

Police say Cancilla had a history of complaints about his neighbors, most recently about noise, and left a note saying only, "Can only be provoked so long before exploding."

The apartment complex is in Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County, about 30 miles east of Pittsburgh.
