Gettysburg attorney pleads guilty to $3M fraud

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A disbarred central Pennsylvania attorney has pleaded guilty in federal court to stealing more than $3 million from eight clients.

A federal judge in Harrisburg set a sentencing conference for March, but not sentencing date for 46-year-old Wendy Weikal-Beauchat (WY'-kal BOO'-shay), of Gettysburg, who pleaded guilty to wire fraud.

Authorities have frozen one of the attorney's bank accounts, which contains $6 million, in hopes of repaying those victims and others who may be discovered as the investigation continues.

Defense attorney Joseph Sembrot says she is cooperating with authorities and doing the best she can to repay clients ripped off as long ago as 2007.

Weikal-Beauchat agreed to be disbarred in February, and was charged last month. She was an estate planning attorney who spent clients' money while pretending to invest it.
