CARBONDALE, Pa. (AP) — Dozens of people have been displaced after a fire broke out in a building of a northeastern Pennsylvania apartment complex.

Authorities said the fire started around 8 a.m. Friday and gutted a ground-floor bedroom at the Summit Garden Apartments in Carbondale, Lackawanna County.

Carbondale Fire Chief Chris Pezak said at least 18 apartments were damaged. Firefighters estimate that between 40 and 70 people are affected.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Firefighters said no one was injured but an 84-year-old woman had to be rescued from her second-story window.

Pezak said the fire-damaged building will be closed until further notice due to smoke and water damage.
