NEW YORK (AP) — Pennsylvania's political elite is gathering in New York City as the race for the state's next governor gets its unofficial start.

Republican Gov. Tom Corbett was to speak at a closed-door meeting of the Pennsylvania Manufacturers' Association on Saturday. The event also features several Democrats lining up for the chance to challenge him next fall.

The first-term governor is scheduled to share a stage with Vice President Joe Biden later in the day.

Biden's appearance is the highlight of a weekend of political festivities known as the Pennsylvania Society, a series of private parties, fundraisers and networking events that bring Pennsylvania's political class to Manhattan's Waldorf Astoria hotel every year.

The governor's race is the center of attention this year.

Corbett has been rated among the nation's most vulnerable incumbents.
