HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A weekend storm expected to drop a foot of snow or more in the Northeast is making its way eastward, with snowflakes beginning to fall in several states.

The fast-moving storm has utilities, airports and local officials on high alert Saturday as shoppers head to stores to finish up Christmas shopping.

The National Weather Service has said 6 to 12 inches of snow are forecast Saturday to Sunday in New England, with as much as 14 inches possible along the Maine coast.

Areas north and west of New York City and interior Pennsylvania could get 8 inches or more.

Meteorologist Paul Head with the National Weather Service in State College, Pa., says winds will pick up into Sunday, presenting hazardous blowing snow for motorists.
