Jammers split with Auburn

June 29, 2009
The Times Observer

AUBURN, N.Y. - Jamestown's offense started off strong and fizzled late in splitting a doubleheader with the Auburn Doubledays on Monday.

In the opener, the Jammers pounded the Doubledays, belting out 14 hits and winning the first seven inning contest, 9-0.

Jamestown took a 1-0 lead after two innings, but it was a four-run fourth that busted the contest open. In that inning, Rand Smith, Chase Austin and Kyle Jensen all singled with Jensen's base hit bringing home a run.

Richard Orton added a two-run double and Ernesto Manzanillo a sacrifice fly before the inning was over and Jamestown held a 5-0 lead it would never come close to relinquishing.

Orton ended the contest with three RBI, including a home run, Austin had a team-high four hits and Sequoyah Stonecipher had three hits, including two doubles.

Three Jamestown pitchers - Matthew Montgomery, Erick Carillo and Kenny Fernandez combined for a two-hitter.

In the nightcap, the Jammers were held to just three hits and didn't plate a run until the final inning in a 5-1 defeat. Auburn did the majority of its damage in a four-run third inning off of Jamestown starter Guery Ramirez.

Jamestown's offense was stifled as the visitors got singles Ernesto Manzanillo and Jose Torres and a solo home run from Chad Cregar in the top of the seventh.

The Jammers (3-7) finish up the three-game set with Auburn Tuesday in a 7:05 p.m. contest.
