STOCKTON, N.J. (AP) — Workers have installed banners commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Centre Bridge -Stockton Bridge over the Delaware River.
The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission says a wooden span supported by stone piers opened in January 1814. It was followed by several wooden bridges, including the last that was destroyed by a fire that was sparked by lightning in 1923.
The current steel span that stands today was built in 1927.
The bridge connects Stockton with Solebury Township, Pennsylvania.
