Seeing Triple

Triplet calves very rare

June 10, 2010
By BRIAN FERRY bferry@timesobserver.com

Finding healthy Hot Chilly Pepper in the field was a big surprise.

But that's exactly what George Savko found Tuesday morning.

Pregnant dairy cows rarely deliver more than one calf.

So when Savko brought two heifer calves back to the Sugar-Lott Farm barn early Tuesday morning, Janet Savko joked, "Is that it?"

George went out and collected another.

The first calf was named Pepper for his all-black face.

George dubbed the second Chilly because she had been sitting out in the field between Sugar Grove and Lottsville on a morning when it was 42 degrees.

The third calf was named neither for an attribute nor a condition at the time of her birth. Rather, her name simply fit with the other two.

Hot, Chilly, and Pepper each weighed between 45 and 50 pounds on Tuesday, George Savko said, while a normal newborn calf is in the 85- to 90-pound range.

"They're cute little devils," Janet Savko said.

The Savkos put in some worry for the youngsters during their first day, but those fears were allayed Wednes
