Wanted: the stuff you wrote about
After getting a chuckle out of the interior vinyl in a previous Afterthought, newsroom staffers faced an unexpected situation. A reader (thanks for reading) who happens to collect vinyl records contacted us about the fate of those records. So far, the contents of the house are still private property. The city has not gone through the steps that would result in a change of ownership, and may never do so. The city doesn't want treasure-hunting citizens wandering around in condemned buildings. Not good for the insurance. At the end stage, when a demolition contractor comes in to bring the structure down, except in the case of an unusual contract the contractor has salvage rights, according to a city official.
The Warren County School District's Curriculum, Instruction and Technology Committee seldom gives out gifts. However, on Monday, chairman Dr. Paul Yourchisin was generous with those in the audience. "You can consider this your Christmas gift from CIT. The agenda is very short." After a short discussion of a worthy (and no-cost) agreement, Yourchisin adjourned the meeting. "I can't believe this is closing in less than three minutes."
Another committee had a similar agenda. The first two categories? "We have no new business... no old business," physical plant and facilities chairman Donna Zariczny said.
Some might say there is no such thing as too much pizza. That, however, wasn't the case when some local officials noted the lack of pizza during a regular meeting. "The last thing we need is more pizza," one member said. That wasn't the consensus, though. "Looks like we could stand to lose some pizza while we're at it," said another. The group survived without the Italian staple.
Blight in the wind
Blighted properties are a nuisance for many townships. In one specific instance, a township had requested a blighted trailer to be taken of by the owner. Problem solved. The township supervisor noted looking out his window one day to see the trailer rolling past his house. If only all blighted properties had wheels, and minds of their own.
