Matthew Zurcher, son of Bob and Mary Zurcher and a 2008 graduate of Warren Area High School, has earned a place on the dean's list at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) for the fifth time. Zurcher has studied musical composition and conducting, religion, English, German, theater, cultural studies, art and film. He is set to graduate in May 2013 with a bachelor of humanities and arts dual degree in musicology and film studies and plans to pursue a career in a creative industry or professorship.

While at CMU, Zurcher has been assistant conductor of the Pittsburgh Opera, the New Music Ensemble of Pittsburgh, and founded the Warren Festival Chorus and Orchestra. His compositions, both classical and as an electronic artist, have been premiered throughout Pittsburgh. He has had two short stories published in a national undergraduate literary journal and three extended essays published in both regional and national research journals. Continuing to be active in theater, Zurcher has performed the roles of Emcee in "Cabaret" and Man in Chair in "The Drowsy Chaperone" for Scotch 'n' Soda Theater Company. He is an active board member of the association and presently in rotation as a director. Currently, Zurcher is working on his first book which connects a French New Wave film of the 1960s to American folk culture and the American folk music revival. His online presence, www.thefamilyberzurcher.com, has been praised by Film Comment and Film Quarterly and the Folk Journal of America.

Robert Matie was named to the Dean's List at Gannon University, Erie, for the Spring 2012 Semester. Matie, a 2011 Warren Area High School Graduate, is a Radiological Science major at Gannon.

Mariah Elizabeth Wolford, Tidioute, daughter of Linda Wolford Theimer, and James Wolford, both of Warren, has been named to the Dean's List for the Spring 2012 semester at St Bonaventure University, St. Bonaventure, NY. She is a graduate of Tidioute Community Charter School and is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in History.

Michelle McAvoy of Warren received a physician assistant science master's degree at the 161st commencement exercises held at Saint Francis University in Loretto, Pa., on May 6.

The following local residents were among more than 600 students from Saint Francis University, Loretto, Pa., who were named to the spring 2012 dean's list: Drew Greenwald, a political science major and resident of Warren, and Kelsey Stoner, a health science (PT) major and resident of Warren. To achieve dean's list at Saint Francis University, a student must have full-time status and must attain a quality point average of at least 3.5.

The following local students were named to the dean's list at Lycoming College, Williamsport: Matthew Jeffrey of Warren, a non-degree general studies major; and Brittany Summers of Sheffield, a sophomore psychology major. The dean's list is issued at the close of each semester in recognition of superior scholarship. Students make the dean's list if they complete at least 12 semester hours and earn a minimum grade point average of 3.50 for the semester.

Sarah Grable graduated from Grove City College on May 19 with a bachelor of arts degree in economics. She is a 2008 homeschooled graduate and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Grable (Kathryn) of Pittsfield.

Jamie Nicklas of Warren has been elected to the dean's list for her junior year at Edinboro University with a 4.0 grade point average. She is majoring in biology / pre-medicine. From Edinboro, Nicklas plans to further her education by attending a physician assistant college. At Edinboro Nicklas is captain of the Edinboro Equestrian Team that finished the year fourth out of 17 other colleges in the ISHA circuit, and she is vice president of the BBB Biological Honor Society. She is the daughter of Barb Sullivan and John Nicklas.
