A Russell woman faces nearly 200 felony counts as a result of fraud and theft activities that occurred over more than a year.
Conewango Township Police reported that Ruth Ellen Griffin, 2001 Cable Hollow Rd,, Russell, provided home health care to an elderly North Warren couple between July 7, 2011 and Sept. 21, 2012. During the time period, police allege that Griffin stole 65 checks from the victims' checking account and forged the male victim's signature to receive money for her personal use.
Police also said that Griffin allegedly stole and used a credit card belonging to the couple and proceeded to make numerous purchases for her own personal use while purporting to be the female victim.
During the period, police estimate that Griffin stole a total of $38,617 from the victims.
Police have charged Griffin with 65 counts of felony forgery, 32 counts of felony access device fraud and 97 counts of felony identity theft. She was also charged with one count of felony theft by deception, one count of felony theft by unlawful taking and one count of misdemeanor theft by unlawful taking.
According to court documents, a preliminary hearing was held at 2 p.m. Monday with preliminary arraignment scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30.
Bail was set on Monday at $50,000 unsecured.
