During half time of the games the Sports Boosters recognized some important people who have each played an instrumental role in shaping the landscape of Sheffield athletics. It's an impossible task to fully describe the amount of time, commitment and sacrifice these folks have put forth through the years to better our sports program at Sheffield. The late nights, the traveling schedule, the weekend games and practices, and most of all the time away from their own family and friends, all for the opportunity to teach, to educate, to coach our student-athletes at SHS: Coach Lee Goldthwaite, Coach Dave Steffan, Coach Tom Dunn and the man who brought back the sweater vest...Coach Todd Fitch were each given a plaque in appreciate for all their years of coaching.
Coach Todd Fitch, a 1982 graduate of Sheffield High School and multiple sport athlete himself, began his coaching career at Sheffield in 1989 with the junior high basketball program where he remained until 2007 when Coach Fitch was named the varsity boys' basketball coach at SHS. He continued on as head boys' basketball coach until the end of his 25th year in 2013 when Coach Fitch decided to put away the clipboard. Through his 25 years at Sheffield, Todd also spent a couple years coaching the girls' JV basketball program. Coach Fitch's ability to instill his knowledge of the game into his players and demand the best out of each individual was instrumental in the success of Wolverine basketball through the last 25 years. Todd has been married to his wife Kim Fitch for 25 years. They have three children Tyler, Emily, and Craig, all graduates of Sheffield High themselves.
Tom Dunn is a 1957 graduate of Sheffield High School. During his high school career, Dunn participated in football and basketball and was 4-year letter winner and also was selected to the AML all-star team for three consecutive years. Upon graduating, Dunn became an educator and began his teaching career at Youngsville starting in 1963 where he remained for 11 years and coached football for 3 years. After those 11 years Dunn decided to bring his teaching skills and rare ability to draw a perfect circleto Sheffield where he taught for the next 29 years and coached football for 22 years and track for 30 years. It was through those 29 years that Dunn coached both football and track, coaching and working with many of the people standing in this gymnasium, mothers, fathers, sons, and daughters. Dunn has been married to his wife Jean for 52 years and they will be celebrating their 53rd anniversary this upcoming September. Dunn has two children, Robin who is a 1980 graduate of Sheffield High, and Tom, a 1985 graduate of Sheffield.
Coach Lee Goldthwaite is a 1962 graduate of Sheffield High School. He himself played JV and Varsity basketball for Sheffield from 1960-1962. Coach Goldthwaite began his coaching career by coaching the 9th grade boys' basketball team for 2 years until he was named boys junior varsity coach and assistant boys' varsity basketball coach. Coach Goldthwaite remained in these positions for the next 21 years where he amassed 313 JV wins and helped guide the varsity team to numerous playoff appearances and twenty-plus win seasons, all of which helped earn himself a spot in the Warren County Sports Hall of Fame. In 2005 Lee became girls' varsity basketball coach and remained in that position until 2009. Lee also coached girls' softball for 18 years where his teams won a total 4 TCAC championships. Lee is husband to Rita Goldthwaite for 47 years and counting. They have two children together Mark and Melissa and 3 grandchildren Ryan, Rachel, and Lyndsey.
Coach Dave Steffan is a 1974 graduate of Sheffield High School. While in high school Coach Steffan played varsity basketball where he helped lead his teams to numerous wins and playoff appearances as well as becoming one of the top 10 scorers all-time in Sheffield basketball history. After high school, Coach Steffan went on to play college basketball 2 years at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford and 2 years at Fredonia State, in which he received many distinguishing awards and honors at the college level. Dave became head boys basketball coach where he led multiple teams to 20+ win seasons, league championships, district championships and PIAA state playoff appearances as well as accumulating over 300 wins. Coach Steffan's teams reached the playoffs in all but 2 of his 23 years as head coach. These accomplishments, along with his personal accomplishments as a player, have landed Coach Steffan in the Warren County Sports Hall of Fame. Coach Steffan has been married to his wife Shelley for 31 years, and will make it 32 this month. They have three children together, Ryan, Shawna, and Kayla who all attended Sheffield High School.
Also receiving recognition were the alumni from Sheffield Area Junior/Senior High School who were Collegian Honor Athletes, Vincent Werner, Danny Petchel and Steven Eisenhower. Pictures of each of these individuals will hang in the Ralph G. Santo gymnasium.
Kalil Slaughter and Matt Benson were honored for their outstanding PI AA State Track and Field records that they set during their sports career at Sheffield Area Middle Senior High School. Each of these outstanding athletes will have a banner placed in the Ralph G. Santo gymnasium recognizing their accomplishments during the State track meet.
In 1991 Matt Benson high jumped 6'8" for a state record and in 1992 he high jumped 7'1" for another state record that still stands today. Kalil Slaughter in 2012 ran the 100M in 10.85 and the 200M 21.78 for a state record.
