MEADVILLE-It was day of ups and downs for the Warren boys golf squad in Monday afternoon's season-opening Region 3 match.
Returning Region 3 all-star Andrew Gignac shot a 75 to lead the region field, and the Dragons placed third out of five teams in the megamatch at Meadville Country Club. Warren's 340 total was just five strokes behind second-place Slippery Rock.
"We had three guys who have never played in a match before, and this was the first time four of them have seen the course," said Warren coach Dan Passmore. "We have to find a way to get closer to 320. Meadville played particularly well today, and we expect them to play that way all year."
The Bulldogs finished with a team score of 317, and had three of the top five finishers in Dalton Zelesco, Charlie Holt, and Matt Birchard, all of whom notched scores under 80.
After Gignac's 75, returning all-star, junior Nathan Sandberg, came in with 81, Anthony Deppas 87, Tyler Bradley 97, Austin Schwanke 98, and Taylor Knowlton 105.
The Dragons will return to action on a more familiar course at Wednesday's Blueberry Classic. The shotgun start is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
Team results: 1. Meadville 317, 2. Slippery Rock 335, 3. Warren 340, 4. Grove City 360, 5. Oil City 381
