Girl Scouts of Western Pennsylvania is honored to present Megan Lou Farrell with the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest recognition for achievement in Girl Scouting. Megan, daughter of Amy and Tim Farrell, is a senior at West Forest High School and serves as treasurer of West Forest Book Club; is a member of National Honor Society, Foreign Language Club and Student Historians; and plays soccer and softball.
As a Girl Scout member for 13 years, Farrell is a Girl Scout Senior in Troop 30410. She was supported by her Gold Award effort by Amy Farrell, Kristen Farrell, Regina Taylor and Beth Grant of the Clarion Service Unit.
Farrell's Gold Award project - which began in January and was completed in June - was to address cancer awareness and prevention in her community. With the help of the volunteers listed and a few others, she organized a cancer awareness walk held June 2. She also designed luminaries to give to people affected by cancer in her community. On the day of the walk, she provided information on cancer prevention she had gathered over time. Although this project took much effort and time, Farrel was happy she could help her community in such a way, she said.
