The Warren Lions Club celebrated 90 years of fellowship and community service with a full evening anniversary program at the Conewango Valley Country Club last Saturday. Dr. Charles MacKenzie, current Warren Lions Club president, opened the evening's festivities, which included dinner, professional entertainment provided by ventriloquist and magician David Crone, a speech by past Lions international director LeGrand Perce III, and an awards presentation. Lions current vice district governor Cathy Morse received the Lions of Pennsylvania Foundation Fellow award; and the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellow award, the highest Lions honor available, was bestowed upon Lions Past President James Embrey.
The Warren Lions Club was chartered in 1923 and over the past 90 years has supported a wide variety of vital health, youth and service causes and organizations. The club was also the originator and instigator of the playground system in the City of Warren. Increasingly over the years, the sight program became a major Lions Club focus with an emphasis on preschool vision screening, glaucoma screening, and service to children and adults with vision difficulties.
Past and current endeavors have contributed greatly to a wide range of local, regional and even international programs, including the PA Lions Research Society, Leader Dogs for the Blind, A Safe Place and Beacon Lodge Camp for the Blind, among many others. Fundraising, through bulb and blind seal sales, concerts, annual white cane days, and 'weenie wagon' appearances at many of Warren's events, has enabled the club to continue their support of these many programs. All of these activities, coupled with Lions Club member commitment and the consistent support of the Warren community, allow the Warren Lions Club to continue to exemplify their motto, "We Serve."
