Jamil Kamara, the son of Denise Flatt-Goolsby, a Warren Area High School graduate currently of Virginia Beach, Va., and grandson of Dennis and Gloria Flatt of Warren, has been invited to play in the 2014 Army All-American Bowl.
For more than 13 years, the U.S. Army All-American Bowl has been the nation's premier high school football game, serving as the preeminent launching pad for America's future college and NFL stars. Adrian Peterson and Andrew Luck made their national debuts as U.S. Army All-Americans. In the 2013 NFL Draft, there were a total of eight U.S. Army All-American Bowl alumni drafted in the first round. The 2013 U.S. Army All-American Bowl drew a crowd of 40,133 to the Alamodome, San Antonio, Texas, and was the most-watched sporting event on television over that weekend, excluding the NFL playoffs.
This year's game will be played Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at the Alamodome, and will be televised at 1 p.m. on NBC. This annual East vs. West event will feature the nation's top 90 high school football players by invitation.
Kamara, 6-foot-2, is ranked as the top high school wide receiver in the state of Virginia by espn300.com, and has over 25 Division I scholarship offers. He has narrowed the choice to three schools, Pitt, Wisconsin and Michigan State. Kamara will announce his decision at the Army Bowl.
Kamara is a senior at Bishop Sullivan Catholic High in Virginia Beach, Va., where he had 69 catches for 1,409 yards and 23 touchdowns. The Bishop Sullivan team went undefeated and won the VISAA state championship.
Kamara has spent many summers in Warren with his grandparents on Branch Street. He credits his grandparents for teaching hard word and dependability. "They are the best grandparents I could ask for and they've always been there for me," he said.
