Four staff members were injured in what Pennsylvania State Police based in Marienville are describing as a riot at the Abraxas juvenile detention and treatment center in Forest County Saturday evening, Dec. 28, beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m..
The incident started when as many as 11 juveniles between the ages of 14 and 17 became disorderly during free time in the facilities gymnasium.
"During the course of the incident, three staff members were assaulted," PSP said. "It escalated from there."
The group then left the gymnasium and entered a dormitory where they threw items around inside building. The juveniles then entered a female dormitory where"upon arriving there, a fourth staff member was physically assaulted."
After the assault eight of the juveniles left the facility on foot and three voluntarily returned to the facility after police arrived. The other five juveniles were found inside a vehicle on the grounds by state troopers.
Injured during the incident were a 29-year old staffer from Brookville; a 48-year old staffer from Strattanville; a 31-year old staffer from Oil City; and a 22-year old staffer from Summerville. They were transported to Clarion Hospital.
State police from Clarion and Ridgway, as well as Clarion ambulance services also responded.
