The Sugar Grove Library Book Club meeting had a special guest on Monday evening. The author for the January book, Lenore Skomal, from Erie came and spent the evening with us at the library. We spent time learning about her character development and writing style.
It was truly a memorable evening for us at the Book Club. February's book selection will be "Bones of the Barbary Coast" by Daniel Hecht. This is the third of the Cree Black thrillers and is about a home in California under which a human skeleton is discovered after the 1906 earthquake.
Get a copy of the book and join us at the February Book Club meeting which will be held on Monday, Feb. 24 at 6:30 p.m. at the Sugar Grove Free Library. This should be another special book club as the author has agreed to Skype and join us for our discussion.
Welcome EHS Band
In February, Warren County will welcome back retired EHS Band Director Harris Lanzel. He retired as Eisenhower High School Band Director in 1999.
During his 31 years at Eisenhower, Lanzel's concert, jazz, and marching bands have consistently earned superior ratings at state contests and festivals. He has a Bachelor's degree from Mansfield University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Music degree from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill. Lanzel has served as a clinician, lecturer, and adjudicator for Pennsylvania, New York and Florida conventions and contests. He has been the conductor with the Naples Concert Band and he has also guest conducted in Pennsylvania, New York, New Mexico and Florida.
Lanzel is now a Naples resident and has also taught instrumental music at Gulf View Middle School, and has worked with the instrumental music programs at East Naples Middle School, St. Ann School, the Village School and Barron Collier High School.
We are pleased to have him back in our area as the guest conductor of this year's District Band event in Youngsville. On Wednesday, Feb. 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. Youngsville Band Director, Cindy Scheid hosted a reception for Lanzel at the Youngsville Elementary Middle School in the library. District Band activities started with the students on Thursday at YHS. The concert for the public will be held at the Youngsville High School on Friday, Feb. 7.
