The Sheffield Township Supervisors met for their first and only meeting of the month on May 5 at the Sheffield Hospitality Center.
Discussion was held on the problems with accumulation of garbage on properties in the township and the enforcement of Ordinance No. 33. After much discussion, the amount charged per day to violators will be increased to $50 rather than $10 for every day someone is in violation of the ordinance. A highlight of the ordinance will also be sent to violators outlining that it regulates the storage and disposal of garbage, rubbish and refuse; it is the duty of everyone in possession, charge or control of any dwelling where garbage, rubbish or other refuse is produced to have garbage collected at least once each week by licensed collector or disposed of at authorized site; to provide and keep on premises a sufficient number of metal or plastic garbage container to hold all garbage accumulated on the premises between pick-up days; to keep container covered and secure to prevent scattering of rubbish; to place all bags or containers at roadside no earlier than 7:30 p.m. on the night before pick-up day.
The new John Deere X500 garden tractor will be purchased from Zahm and Matson for a total cost of $5,897.31. The majority of this cost of the new tractor comes from the Memorial Park account. The money generated in this account comes from the festivals at which Lions Club volunteers run the concession stand.
We have received notification from the Allegheny National Forest on our forestry earnings for this year. We will be receiving $61,845.55; this is down from $75,000 we received last year. The amount of forestry earnings that we receive continues to drop year after year.
The sign inspections for the federal highway administration issued standards for sign retroreflectivity was complete by Roadmaster Yonkie, road crew, Dan Thayer and Supervisor Labesky. They traveled 43 miles during the night and inspected 277 signs in the township. All signs meet the required regulations and a sign inventory is on hand at the township office.
Labesky attended a kickoff meeting with PennDOT, E & M Engineers and the contractor L.C. Whitford at the Henry's Mills Bridge site. This bridge will be under construction beginning June 10 and a completion date of Sept. 30. Henry's Mills Road will be closed for the dropping of several trees onto the road, so citizens can be prepared for this issue. The total cost of this bridge is $807,886. Sheffield Township is responsible for only 5 percent of the total cost. This bridge is under the TIP program, which is paid for 80 percent federal funds, 15 percent state funds and 5 percent local municipalities.
