Robert Petruney, along with three co-workers, received commander's award for civilian service for his outstanding efforts that result in saving the life of a man trapped on a boat.
On June 22, 2014 a pleasure craft with four occupants went through one of the gates at Dresden Island lock and dam during a period of high flows and fast current. Responding immediately to the dam, Petruney and his co-workers found a recreational boat pinned underneath gate 8 with one person still on board. Three other persons had jumped from the boat and had been pulled through the dam. Robert and three other Corps employees were able to get lines and floatation devices to stabilize the boat, keeping the man on the boat as safe as possible.
The quick response and team work shown by Petruney led to a successful rescue. His actions and dedication to duty reflect great credit upon him, the Rock Island District and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Robert is the son of John and Nancy Petruney of Tiona and graduated from Sheffield Area Middle Senior High School.
