Youngsville Life: Magician to perform Monday in Youngsville

Cris Johnson is pictured performing during his appearance at the Youngsville Public Library in 2023. Johnson will perform Monday at Youngsville Free Methodist Church at 10 a.m.

Cris Johnson will perform The Great Reading Adventure at 10 a.m. Monday at Youngsville Free Methodist Church.

The program is hosted by the Youngsville Public Library but takes place at the church to allow more people to attend and because it is equipped to handle Johnson’s show. The Great Reading Adventure includes magic, music, clean/campy comedy and audience participation. The show is paid for in part by county coordination funding.

No registration is necessary. The Youngsville Library will also be providing free, complimentary snacks to audience members after the show. Those unable to attend can attend a 10 a.m. show June 24 at the Sugar Grove Volunteer Fire Department, with the show sponsored by the Sugar Grove Free Library via county coordination funding.

(a) Free Snack Program: The Youngsville Public Library’s ninth annual free summer snack program is happening daily through Aug. 23. Stop in daily during library business hours and get a free “grab and go” snack. Snacks are located in the lobby area of the Library. Snacks are for all ages, kids and adults alike. Snacks are provided thanks to a partnership with CHOP (Child Hunger Outreach Project) and through private donations.

(b) Sensory Story Time: Join a free, interactive and immersive sensory story time on Tuesday from 10:30 to 11 a.m. at the Youngsville Public Library. Sensory story time is offered the fourth Tuesday of each month, no registration necessary. In many ways sensory storytime is similar to a regular story time with books, songs, and movement, but it also is a special, safe, and encouraging space for children with special needs to interact with their peers. It also includes time for exploration of sensory bins and various manipulatives too that help develop fine- and gross-motor skills. Target ages are 4-8 years (developmentally) but all are welcome.

(c) Fiction & Fitness Youth Program: Targeted ages 4-12 but all are welcome. Wednesday, July 3, from 10 to 11 a.m. is the second day of the five-part program series. Location is the Youngsville YMCA patio/pavilion (Island Park) rain or shine. If it’s raining, meet under the Island Park pavilion. This is a partnership program between the Youngsville Library and Youngsville YMCA. No registration required. Come and enjoy themed stories, corresponding fitness activity, a healthy snack, & a take-home craft each program date. Upcoming program dates: July 3rd – Cornhole theme; July 17th- shark theme; July 31st – softball theme; August 21st – soccer theme. Questions call the library at 814-563-7670.

(d) Appeal for Legos: Youngsville Library is interested in offering a “Lego Club” program for kids as soon as the end of July. Library officials are asking the community for donations of “gently-used but no longer played with” Legos to help the library with this new programming idea.

“The ultimate goal is to have a monthly ‘Lego Club’ program year-round,” said Library Director Kristy Wallace. “And we’re hoping to get large enough donations of Legos to make this program both viable and able to start as soon as July! Starting Monday, June 24, we will have a tub set out near the circulation desk for people to drop-off any ‘gently-used’ Lego donations they can part with during business hours to help us get this program up and running as soon as possible. So please think of donating your Legos to YPL for this worthy program. Our vision is to have a monthly Lego Club that encourages on-site creativity and building. The Legos creations will not leave the building, so rest assured that your Lego donations will be used again and again at the library. The intention is to display all the Lego creations in the locked, glass display case located in YPL’s lobby. Then each month members of the Lego Club can either choose to add-on to their existing creations or create something completely new based upon various themes, such as ‘make a monochromatic build’ or ‘create a vehicle that can fly.’ Lego Club will be a combination of guided and independent creativity. We’re both hopeful and excited for this program to be a success.”
