PennDOT looking at options for aging bridge in Spring Creek

The Cemetery Road bridge in Spring Creek Township has been closed since 2012. PennDOT has scheduled a public meeting as part of an effort to determine whether to repair, replace or tear down the 128-year-old bridge.

PennDOT is looking for input on what to do with a bridge in Spring Creek Township that is nearly 130 years old.

Department spokesperson Jim Carroll said in a statement on Wednesday that a meeting has been set for Thursday, August 3 regarding the Cemetery Road Bridge that runs over the Brokenstraw Creek.

The meeting will be held at the township municipal building from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and is intended to “provide project information and gather public input.”

It’s located on Cemetery Road just west of the intersection with Route 426 and about three-quarter miles east of the intersection with Old Route 77.

The bridge has been closed since 2012 “when deterioration reached the point where the bridge was no longer considered safe,” PennDOT said. “Before it closed, the bridge was used by about 140 vehicles a day, on average.”

While considered to be structurally deficient today, that shouldn’t be a surprise as the bridge was initially constructed back in 1889.

A document available on the Pa. House of Representatives GOP website indicates that removal of that bridge would cost approximately $500,000.

PennDOT hasn’t yet decided what to do with the bridge as it sits today.

“Currently we are looking at the purpose and need for the bridge to determine whether it should be replaced, repaired or removed,” Carroll said.

Either way, something is expected to happen to the bridge in 2019.

“That is the anticipated timeframe,” Carroll added. “A change in plans is always possible, but that is our target.”

Starting at $2.99/week.
