IRVING, N.Y. — A boat that landed on a break wall in Sunset Bay early Monday created a frenzy of rescue workers looking for possible victims, only to find out the individuals involved allegedly left the scene without reporting the accident.

On Monday, around 2:25 a.m., Chautauqua County sheriff’s deputies received a report of a boat crash in the area of the break wall near Hanover Town Park. Responding deputies found a 23-foot cuddy cabin boat grounded on top of the break wall with no one around.

Multiple agencies were then dispatched and began a search of the area. Sunset Bay Fire Department, Lake Erie Beach Fire Department, Erie County Air One, Chautauqua County Water Emergency Team and the Chautauqua County Navigation Unit all assisted in the search. The search was called off around 5:30 a.m. when deputies on shore were able to locate 40-year-old Robert J. Bengert of Willowdale Avenue, Blasdell. Bengert was identified as a passenger in the boat at the time of the crash. An investigation found that both Bengert and the operator of the boat — later identified as 54-year-old Scott Schieder of Lawson Road, Cheektowaga — suffered only minor injuries in the crash, and allegedly left the scene without reporting the crash.

The investigation remains open and charges are pending, the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office said.

“Boat operators all need to exercise due care while operating their vessels in any areas,” Chautauqua County Sheriff Jim Quattrone told The Post-Journal. “Operators need to be clear-minded and be observant for other boaters and fixed objects.”
