Locals taking part in Speed Week in Utah

Salt of the Earth

Photo submitted to Times Observer “Urgently,” the 1989 Camaro owned and operated by 1989 Eisenhower High School graduates Todd Woodin and Lane Wiggers, and Sasha Chernukha — is on display at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah at the 2019 Speed Week. The team members hope to get “Urgently” into the 200 mile per hour club at this year’s Speed Week, Aug. 7 through 13.

It’s all for the love of speed.

There are no trophies. No cash prizes.

At stake is pride, and for those who join the 200 miles-per-hour club, a red hat.

Eisenhower High School class of 1989 graduates Todd Woodin, now the magisterial district judge for western Warren County, and Lane Wiggers, currently of Malvern and operating partner at Argosy Private Equity, with long-time friend Alexander “Sasha” Chernukha, will drive their car “Urgently” — a 1989 Camaro — at the Bonneville Salt Flats 2021 Speed Week currently taking place through Aug. 13.

At the 2019 Speed Week, all three drivers got the car to 150 miles per hour on “terrible conditions,” according to Woodin. Rain turned the salt flats into mush flats.

“The projected condition of the salt — barring rain — is that it will be excellent, the best it has been since the 1960s during the apex of Bonneville land speed racing,” Woodin said. “Hopefully it will be better than 2019 when the salt was so wet as to be barely usable, hindering our attempts to achieve anything more than basic licensing runs.”

New drivers have to demonstrate their ability to control the car at high speeds.

In 2019, the team was running a six-liter, 366 cubic inch motor. A two-year gap between events allowed them time for an upgrade.

The team ran “Urgently”“it’s a beast” — at the 2021 Arkansas Mile Challenge in May. “At that event, we made a pass at 191 mph before we decided that we had an engine issue requiring a full teardown,” Woodin said. “That has been done and the LS-based 427 CI engine made 800-plus naturally-aspirated horsepower on the dyno a couple weeks ago.”

“We hope to go over 200 mph this year and get a better understanding of the handling characteristics,” Woodin said. “From there, we’ll make any necessary tweaks and changes. Once all that is sorted, we’ll try to make some record runs.”

‘Urgently’ runs in the B/GC class. It is a Gas (gasoline powered) Coupe, without a blower or turbo. The 427-inch motor fits in class B.

“The record for B/GC currently stands at 237.045 mph,” Woodin said.

“It is very cool and we keep it all G rated,” he said.
