City to enforce rules for vegetation drop off

Times Observer photo by Brian Ferry The rules at the city lawn debris drop-off at Harmar Street are clearly stated and, starting Monday, will be enforced.

The vegetation drop-off at the City of Warren sewer treatment plant is seeing enough abuse that officials are going to have to enforce the rules more stringently.

The Harmar Street drop-off allows residents to get rid of lawn debris at no charge. It is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

“The drop-off is to be used by city residents only,” Department of Public Works Superintendent Joe Reinke said. “No contractors — even if you are cutting for a city resident — you are being paid to dispose of those materials.”

“We can’t keep up with the amount of brush coming in,” Reinke said.

As of Monday, a city representative will check identification of those dropping off.

“If you are a city resident and you use the service, make sure you have valid ID,” he said.

The material dropped off is used by the city to make compost.

The compost not used by the city is piled at Betts Park and residents are welcome to use it.

“We’ve been replenishing it all year,” Reinke said. “People keep taking it. That’s great.”

“We have enough to keep putting it out for the rest of the year,” he said.

Starting at $2.99/week.
