Local law enforcement are again partnering to help residents dispose of any unwanted, unused or expired prescriptions.

Oct. 29 will mark, on a national level, the 23rd National Drug Take Back initiative.

Anyone with these medications, creams or liquids, such as cough syrup, is invited to drop them off at the Youngsville Police station on Oct. 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Other participating agencies include Conewango Township police, City of Warren police and the Warren County Sheriff’s Office.

The drop-offs are available year-round but the federal Drug Enforcement Administration will be picking up everything that is collected on the 29th around 2 p.m.

“We’re trying to get as many addictive drugs out of the home” as possible, Youngsville Borough Police Chief Todd Mineweaser said. “We’ve learned through investigations that people pay attention” to obituaries and causes of deaths in picking possible sites.

“Sometimes a good burglar will pay attention to that,” he added. “(We) want to get that stuff out of the home as soon as possible.”

The event in Warren County has grown considerably since the first collection when Mineweaser collected 23 pounds.

Last year, a total of 368 pounds were collected and past years include amounts up to over 550 pounds.

“It varies,” Mineweaser said.

Medications donated throughout the year are stored, Mineweaser said, in the department’s evidence safe until the next DEA collection.

“Bring it to us,” he said. “We’ll take care of it.”
