Traffic snarled after truck brings down traffic signal

Times Observer photos by Brian Ferry The traffic signals at the mouth of South South Street at Pennsylvania Avenue East dangle at and just above the street after a one-vehicle crash Tuesday morning.

Traffic on Pennsylvania Avenue East was snarled late Tuesday morning after a tractor trailer brought down a utility pole.

The westbound truck made a legal left turn onto South South Street, but the trailer snagged overhead wires at 11:24 a.m. The wires in turn pulled down a utility pole at the southwest corner of the intersection.

City of Warren officials said the pole had been struck in another crash about a week ago.

City police, fire, and department of public works responded to the scene.

Two of the intersection’s eight traffic signals were on the ground after the truck was freed from the wires.

The remaining traffic signals, and even the crosswalk sign on the downed pole, continued to work after the crash.

City crews planned to place stop signs at the intersection until the signals can be replaced.

Westbound traffic was permitted to pass through the intersection. Eastbound truck traffic was detoured on South Carver Street to Lexington Avenue. Eastbound passenger vehicles were sent north to Madison Avenue.

Starting at $2.99/week.
