TV given away as part of anniversary celebration

Times Observer photo by Brian Ferry Tom Jackman accepts the grand opening grand prize 55-inch Smart TV from Teddy’s at Pellegrino’s Owner Stephanie Proukou, much like Terry English accepted a three-year anniversary grand prize much smaller TV from Teddy Proukou in 1971.

On the third anniversary of the opening of the Warren Sub Shop, owner Teddy Proukou gave away a TV.

To celebrate the reopening on the shop and commemorate 55 years, Teddy’s at Pellegrino’s Owner Stephanie Proukou gave away a TV. It just so happened it was a 55-inch TV.

Stephanie Proukou had been hearing people talk about her dad’s famous Steak Sub since he sold the shop in the mid-1980s.

After she moved back to the area, there was no avoiding those memories. So, she held a festival — A Taste of Home — in September to bring back the Steak Sub for a day.

She didn’t have plans to re-open some version of Teddy’s.

“The festival had such overwhelming response,” she said. “When I saw how much everyone wanted it, I did it.”

The grand opening was in January and the store is open from 4 to 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays at 449 Conewango Ave., Warren. Customers are welcome to call orders in to (814) 230-9339 starting at 3:15 p.m.

As she was looking through old materials from when the Sub Shop, later Teddy’s, had been open, she found an article from a 1971 Times Observer.

Her father had held a contest with a grand prize of a television. Terry English won that contest.

“I said, ‘That’s what I’m going to do,'” Proukou said. “I wanted to recreate that event.”

At the grand opening, people could sign up to win.

Tom Jackman, who had been a regular customer in 1974, was one of those who signed up.

“I’ve always loved their steak subs,” Jackman said. “That’s why I’m back.”

“I started going to Teddy’s after it moved into its last place in 1973,” Jackman said. While working at Struthers with Michael Proukou, ‘on Friday nights, we’d get an order together and we’d go get them on our lunch break.”

Jackman was informed that he had won the TV and picked it up Friday.

Proukou is pleased with her decision to get her family back into the restaurant business.

“It’s so much more than the sub,” she said. “People are saying, ‘You’re reminding us of a time before.'”

“I love how it’s bringing people together,” she said.

Starting at $2.99/week.
