Tournaments on tap in memory of Hultman

Photo provided to the Times Observer Caleb Hultman, who still holds the 800-meter record at Warren Area High School, died in a work-related accident in 2020. His family keeps his legacy alive with two upcoming events — a cornhole tournament and softball tournament — as well as a scholarship fund that aids track and field athletes.
Running was an important part of Calub Hultman’s life.
So to continue that legacy, his family will again hold cornhole and softball tournaments where the funds generated will go to scholarships for athletes that continue their track careers in college.
First up is the cornhole tournament, which is set for this Saturday at the Clarendon VFW Pavilion.
Hultman, who died in a work-related accident in 2020, spent the Sunday before he died playing cornhole and KanJam with his family.
Registration for the event will run from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and cost $30 for each two-person team. All skill levels are welcome.
“Last year we had players from 6 to 76,” his parents, Steve and Pam, said. “The tournament has a guaranteed first place prize of $500.00. There will be gift basket raffles and a DJ for family fun”
Food and beverages will be available as well as a pulled pork or sausage sandwich dinner which will cost $10 in addition to a basket raffle.
The softball tournament will follow the next weekend.
“Caleb was a very passionate softball player,” Steve Hultman said. “He was loved by his teammates and Caleb loved them and their families as well.”
The three-day event will kick off at Betts Park on Friday, Sept. 22 at 6:30 p.m. with a home run derby — $10 for 10 swings.
A co-ed tournament will be Saturday, Sept. 23 with a men’s tournament to follow on Sunday, Sept. 24.
The event will include basket raffles, 50-50 drawings, a DJ, food vendors and t-shirts, etc. available for purchase.
Those looking to register are asked to call or text Robby Thomas at (814) 730-9155. Registration closes Saturday.
“Caleb’s family is very grateful for the love and support the Warren community has shown in his memory while growing this tribute to him,” his parents said. “The best part is talking with people who knew Caleb and listening to their stories.”
All these athletic pursuits will also directly benefit a different set of athletes. “When he went to college there weren’t many track scholarships and we would like to help others that love running as much as Caleb did,” Steve Hultman said.
Hultman still holds the school record in the 800 meters and along with his 4×4 relay team.
In addition to scholarships, the scholarship fund aims to help those who might otherwise not be able to run in high school due to the costs — pay to play fees, track shoes, etc. — involved.
Anyone in that situation is asked to contact Pam Hultman at (814) 730-3434.
Two $1,000 scholarships have been awarded — one male, one female — each of the last two years. The 2023 recipients were Sheffield’s Lucas McNeal and Warren’s Carmen Moore.
Those looking to contribute directly to the scholarship fund can do so by mailing a check to the Community Foundation of Warren County, 310 Second Ave., Warren, with “Caleb Hultman Memorial Fund” on the memo line.
