‘An amazing cast’: Warren Players to open Seussical Friday

Times Observer photos by Daniella Langianese The Warren Players rehearsed a scene from the second act of the musical, “Seussical,” which brings to life the colors and characters of Dr. Suess. The play debuts this Friday at 7 p.m. at Struthers Library Theatre, in Warren.

First time Director Amanda Beil and the cast of Warren Players were busy the evening of Wednesday, March 27, rehearsing for their upcoming rendition of “Seussical,” which is now one of the most performed shows in America

“Seussical is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza,” said Beil.

Suessical will open at 7 p.m. on Friday with additional performances at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 6 and at 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 7 at the Struthers Library Theatre in Warren.

“Oh, the thinks you can think” when Dr. Seuss’ best-loved characters collide and cavort in an unforgettable musical caper performed by the actors of Warren Players.

During “Seussical,” The Cat in the Hat tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust that contains the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child sent off to military school for thinking too many “thinks.”

A local mother and her two daughters perform onstage during rehearsals for the Warren Players’ presentation of “Seussical,” which will open this Friday at Struthers Library Theatre, in Warren. The woman, Chelsea Burkett, in the background, behind the family plays the infamous Cat in the Hat during the musical.

Tony winners, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Lucky Stiff, My Favorite Year, Once on This Island, Ragtime), have brought to life all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie and a little boy with a big imagination – Jojo. The colorful characters transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos.

“I’m extremely blessed to have such an amazing cast! They are eager to get on the stage and they put their all into each practice!” said Beil.

“Directing this show has been one of the best experiences in my life and I’m so grateful to have some of my closest friends up on stage, doing what they love! We also have some students from “Seussical Jr.” which was never performed due to Covid shut down! It’s such a great feeling to allow them to finally do Seussical and fulfill that void,” Beil concluded.

Chelsea Burkett, who plays my Cat in the Hat, was the previous director for “Seussical Jr.” had this to say in regards to performing in another rendition of Dr. Seuss characters, colors and fun:

“This is my fifth time being involved in a version of Seussical. Three of these times I have directed “Seussical Jr.,” most recently I directed the Warren County school District All County Musical Junior production, which was to open the day COVID shut the world down in 2020,” said Burkett. “Unfortunately, the amazing student cast was never able to perform for an audience. Now, four years later, some of the same students that were to be in that production are in Warren Players production, which is pretty awesome. “This is kind of like closure for that production even though it’s so many years later, and with different people and I’m playing a very different role. Audience members will see some of our original set pieces from that production used in this production! Being the Cat in the Hat is so fun because the Cat is a zany character and I get to be a bit crazy for the entirety of the show. It has been great to be in this production and see Amanda’s vision of the story come to life! This is such a fun show that the entire family can enjoy and we hope to see many of them in the audience!”

Adult tickets for the performance will cost $20, seniors aged 65 and up tickets will cost $18, tickets for students, ages 6 to 17, will cost $16 and children under age 5 can enjoy Seussical for free.
