Learn-To-Fish Program aims to reel in youth, Aug. 10

Submitted photo The 22nd annual McKown Learn-to-Fish Program will be on Aug. 10; sign-ups are open through July 17.

The Learn-to-Fish Program is a memorial event to remember Brent McKown, 1935-2001, a lifelong, avid fisherman in both Warren and Chautauqua Counties.

McKown also enjoyed helping children learn to fish and appreciate the outdoors.

The program, created in 2002, allows young people to learn how to fish and provides them with the necessary starting equipment.

It will be held on Saturday, Aug. 10 from 8 a.m. to noon, at the Brokenstraw Fish and Game Club, Mead Run Road, Youngsville. The McKown family will be in attendance handing out fishing gear — poles, fishing boxes of lures, hooks — to children ages 2 through 15.

The program is free, but pre-registration is required. Space is limited to 50 participants, and children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian when picking up their equipment.

To qualify, kids must be registered by July 17.

To register, please call Derek McKown or Pam Tidrick at 814-489-3110.

Join the McKown family for refreshments and a morning of discovering the joys of fishing.

Donations to the program are needed annually and can be arranged by calling 814-489-3110.

Starting at $2.99/week.
