Seldom recorded mushroom found near Kinzua Dam

An underdocumented species of aquatic mushroom has been found near the Kinzua Dam.

The Pennsylvania Natural Heritage Program, a combination of several state, federal and regional agencies and organizations, announced the finding in a Facebook post earlier this month.

“Last month, scientists searched the area downstream of Kinzua Dam for an underdocumented species of mushroom in the genus Psathyrella,” the post explained.

The agencies say that a New York man discovered the population in June 2023 and returned with a crew this year. Five of the mushrooms were subsequently.

They describe the mushroom as an “immature thumb tack-sized specimen” that “has no known human uses and is not considered edible.”

Because of that, the group says there’s “no reason to collect these mushrooms other than as needed for scientific inventory purposes” and that they’re “working with the state’s mycology community to assess the conservation status of fungi and will be tracking this population of the aquatic Psathyrella.”

The PHNP is a partnership between the Pa. Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Pa. Fish and Boat Commission, Pa. Game Commission and Western Pennsylvania Conservancy with cooperation from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The effort “gathers and provides information on the location and status of flora, fauna and fungi” in the state and works to “provide current, reliable, objective ecological data and analysis to help guide conservation work and land-use planning.”

Starting at $2.99/week.
