Fundraiser, volunteer meeting set to kickoff non-profit

As the Warren Area Refugee Resettlement Network gets up and running, there are places for more people to get involved.

The two most significant needs are housing and volunteers.

And events are set in the coming weeks aimed at both of those areas.

First, a spaghetti dinner fundraiser will be held at First Lutheran Church, W. Third Ave., Warren, on Tuesday from 4:24 p.m. (selected because April 24 was the date Ukraine was invaded) until 6:15 p.m.

“This is our kick-off introduction of WARRN and an opportunity to say ‘thank you’ for their generosity of welcome to our new friends,” Rev. Jeff Ewing, pastor at First Lutheran Church, said.

Those looking to donate outside of the sinner can do so by sending gifts to First Lutheran Church (with checks made out to ‘WARRN’) or online at flcwarren.com.

An informational meeting for anyone interested in volunteering is also set for Monday, Sept. 30, at 6:30 p.m. That session will be held at the Northern Pennsylvania Regional College’s fourth floor conference room, 300 Second Ave., Warren.

“We need skill sets, maybe some lawyers that would be willing to work with us regarding the legal aspect,” Ewing said. “We could use a volunteer that might be able to build a website for us (and) families and individuals to actually sponsor the people coming over.”

But there are other ways for people to get involved.

Ewing outlined a need for people to provide transportation to doctor’s appointments, helping get apartments ready or supply furnishings.

He said last week seven people went to an apartment for the next family coming. The apartment needed to be painted and spruced up.

“Those are the kinds of things that we need volunteers for,” Ewing said. “Oftentime we think we’re helping them so much. You do this kind of work, you get out so much more than what you give.”

Starting at $2.99/week.
