Festival raises money for local cancer treatment
Flickerwood Wine Cellars recently held its second annual Screw Cancer Festival and Fundraiser, raising $16,100 for the Warren Cancer Center.
The Community Blood Bank collected 41 units of blood.
The festival included 12 musicians who donated their time throughout the day, many of whom played in bands with their father, Ron Zampogna, over the past years. Over two years the Screw Cancer Festival and Fundraiser has raised a total of $31,000.
“The festival was started to honor our dad and other friends of ours that have cancer. The initial idea started in the ER when our dad needed a blood transfusion and my sister and I wanted to give blood right then and there at the hospital but could not do so. At that moment, we decided to sponsor a blood drive.
“As we talked and in true Zampogna style it grew into a music festival which raised money for the Warren Cancer Center where our dad was being treated and yes it included a blood drive.” said Tammy Zampogna-Liberato.
Money was raised by private donations, a live auction, a silent auction, basket giveaway and the sale of lanterns and t-shirts. The festival added a Warrior Wall and received 50 pictures of people who have cancer or have passed away from cancer.
The night concluded with the release of flying lanterns to honor people’s loved ones who passed on from cancer.
