Man assaulted with screwdriver, frying pan
SHEFFIELD – A Sheffield man faces felony charges after allegedly hitting another man with a screwdriver and a frying pan.
Joseph H. Shimmel II, 24, of Sheffield was charged with aggravated assault, a class 2 felony, simple assault and harassment on Saturday by the State Police at Warren for an incident in Sheffield. He was arraigned preliminarily by Judge Todd Woodin and sent to the county jail on $100,000 bail. A preliminary hearing will be held Dec. 4.
State troopers responded to the Sheffield Country Manor Apartments at 10:35 a.m. Saturday for a report of an assault and found a man whose face and sweatshirt were covered in blood from two cuts on the top of his scalp that had been bandaged by EMTs before troopers arrived.
According to the affidavit of probable cause the man had gone to another person’s room to ask for the television remote control in a shared common area of the apartment building.
“When asking Shimmel for the remote, Shimmel became enraged, grabbed a screwdriver from his room and began striking (the victim) with the pointed end,” the affidavit states. “At this time (the victim) attempted to flee down the hallway when Shimmel walked back into his room and grabbed a frying pan. Shimmel exited his room and walked down the hallway towards (the victim) and began beating (the victim) over the head with the frying pan multiple times, causing serious lacerations to the top of (the victim’s) head.”
During the incident Shimmel also allegedly pushed and shoved the other man and then allegedly bit both of the person’s wrists, causing open wounds and bleeding.
