Warren Area Student Union adds new student-led events
The Warren Area Student Union (WASU) is adding new events to its repertoire.
The union is a non-profit organization that provides a safe place for the youth of Warren and surrounding areas in fifth through 12th grades. It provides opportunities for students to make friends, collaborate on projects, and develop social and leadership skills.
The students design activities they participate in, such as the annual Halloween Haunted House, a newly launched theatre program, and a basketball tournament that was new this year.
The recently held 3-on-3 basketball tournament to showcase the gym and program at WASU. It was also another fundraiser opportunity to help support the WASU and some much-needed facility repairs and equipment purchases. Seven teams participated in the inaugural basketball tournament. WASU plans to hold the tournament next November, hoping to grow the event.
The Youth Board organizes activities, raises money for its activities and oversees community volunteering. The next new event is the WASU Theatre Program (WKTP) hosting a show, The Santa Interviews, directed and produced by student Kendra Casey.
The show will be at WASU on Dec. 13 at 6 p.m. The cost is $5 per person. All proceeds raised by WASU fundraisers directly benefit the students’ initiatives.
For more information, visit the Warren Area Student Union Facebook page or visit the facility at 330 Hickory St., Warren. Pam Falber is the executive director. WASU is open from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
