Wildfire contained in Glade, another begins in Youngsville

Fourteen area fire departments combined to contain a wildfire on Hemlock Road in Glade Township on Sunday and Monday – though any respite is short-lived.

Multiple fire departments were responding to another wildfire on Matthews Run Road in Youngsville on Monday at 1:30 p.m.

The Glade Township fire started around 1:30 p.m. Sunday. The Glade Volunteer Fire Department was joined by 13 other units on the wildfire scene, which had spread over 40 acres. The Warren City Police and Fire Departments, EmergyCare, and US Forest Service, along with Sheffield, Spring Creek, Tidioute, Clarendon, Wrightsville, Pleasant Township, and Cherry Grove Volunteer Fire Departments, all came together in a unified response to the fire, which was successfully contained by Monday afternoon.

“There was a wrist injury of a firefighter and a volunteer with chest pains, but everyone is okay,” said Dave English, Glade Volunteer Fire Dept. third assistant chief. “No homes or property were damaged, and people nearby did not have to evacuate.”

The land involved is private property, but the fire is under investigation by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR). According to the law, the DCNR has the authority to bill the person responsible for starting the fire for the costs associated with extinguishing it.

The National Weather Service in State College has issued a special weather statement for Warren, McKean, and Forest counties, highlighting an elevated risk of wildfires. Although no burn ban is in effect, local fire departments emphasize that the current dry and windy conditions significantly increase the likelihood of wildfire spreading. It is essential to exercise caution during this time.

“There is no current ban, but if someone were to ask me, I definitely wouldn’t suggest burning. The potential for a fire to start and spread rapidly, especially with the winds, is too high to risk,” English said.
