The “Battle of the Bells” invites volunteers from local organizations to compete as bell ringers to raise the most funds each day. The Salvation Army’s Western Pennsylvania Division is facing significant challenges this holiday season. With less than two weeks remaining until the campaign’s conclusion on Christmas Eve, the organization has only raised 35% of its $2.34 million goal. In Allegheny County, the shortfall is similarly stark, with just 38% of the $557,000 target reached.
Since its inception in 1891, the Red Kettle Campaign has symbolized hope and community generosity during the holiday season. The tradition began when a Salvation Army captain placed a pot at a ferry landing in San Francisco, urging passersby to “Keep the Pot Boiling” to help feed those in need. Today, the campaign continues to rely on public contributions to provide critical support year-round.

Contributions can be made in person by dropping donations into Red Kettles at fundraising locations, including Walmart in Warren.
