Snowmobiling begins in Allegheny National Forest

Allegheny National Forest officially opened its snowmobile season Monday. The season will run through March 31, closing at noon.

These dates ensure safety by beginning after the conclusion of the regular firearms deer hunting season.

The U.S. Forest Service reminds riders that adequate snowfall is necessary for trail use, and grooming will only occur once sufficient snow accumulates. For real-time updates on trail conditions, riders can consult the Pennsylvania State Snowmobile Association’s website and social media channels.

This season, Allegheny National Forest offers several updates for snowmobilers:

— Temporary Trail Reroute: A 3.45-mile section of the Allegheny Snowmobile Loop near Four Corners in Highland Township, Elk County, has been re-routed. The new path includes Forest Road (FR) 661, the Timberline ATV trail, and Corduroy Road (T-322). Signage will mark the re-route, while the old trail segment will remain closed.

— Road Access Reinstated: FR 141 and FR 262 (Longhouse Scenic Drive) will reopen for snowmobile use this winter after being closed during the 2020-2021 season for construction.

— Connector Trail 38: The 5.5-mile Lewis Run Snowmobile Bypass Trail provides an alternative to the main 1A trail. Starting at Pine Acres Country Club, it passes through both public and private land, ending at the intersection of FR 188 and FR 455.

— Connector Trail 39: The Bradford Airport Connector Trail links Bradford Regional Airport to the main 1A trail via FR 310. Riders can access it from State Highways 59 and 219, with the trail ending at Connector 38.

The forest offers approximately 365 miles of suggested snowmobile routes, with an additional 52 miles shared by snowmobiles, ATVs, and OHMs when conditions allow. With multiple user groups sharing the trails, including hikers, skiers, snowshoers, and dog sled teams, caution is strongly advised.

Trail users should follow these key safety guidelines: Always stay on designated trails to protect the environment and private property rights. Prepare for rapidly changing weather and trail conditions by checking forecasts and dressing in layers. Carry essential supplies, including a map, flashlight, water, snacks, and a fully charged phone. Riders should also wear helmets and ensure their snowmobiles are well-maintained, with adequate fuel and emergency repair kits on hand. Avoid riding alone whenever possible, and inform someone of your planned route and expected return time. Due to unpredictable ice thickness, motorized vehicles should never be driven on the frozen Allegheny Reservoir.

Additional safety reminders for all winter recreationists include respecting other trail users, maintaining safe speeds, and being alert for obstacles such as log trucks, groomers, and natural hazards like fallen branches. Snowmobilers should also avoid alcohol consumption while riding, as impaired operation is a leading cause of accidents.
