Martin, 9, of Russell recently claimed first place in the Junior Baking Contest at the Pennsylvania Farm Show.

Competing against 65 talented bakers, Annabelle, one of the youngest participants, impressed the judges with her unique sea salt caramel French macaron bars, which earned her a first-place ribbon and a $500 cash prize.

The Pennsylvania Farm Show Junior Baking Contest is open to amateur bakers aged 8 to 18 who reside in Pennsylvania. To qualify, contestants must win the PA Preferred Junior Baking Cookies, Brownies, & Bars contest at an approved Pennsylvania agricultural fair during the prior season.

Annabelle secured her spot by excelling in the 2024 fair season and brought her A-game to the state competition.

A key element of the contest is the emphasis on local ingredients. Annabelle showcased her dedication to this requirement by using fresh eggs sourced from Ekey’s Marketplace in Warren, Pennsylvania. Her sea salt caramel French macaron bars stood out for their combination of rich flavors, precise technique, and lavish presentation.

Annabelle’s mother, Danielle Martin, shared that when Annabelle learned she had won, she said, “What’s a 9-year-old to do with $500?!”

Annabelle said, “I feel proud that I went against so many other contestants and won.”

The competition, held annually in Harrisburg, is a highlight of the Pennsylvania Farm Show. It celebrates the state’s agricultural heritage and fosters a passion for baking among younger generations.

Starting at $2.99/week.
