Examining LGBTQIA+ Scripture: A Conversation on Inclusion and Understanding will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church, 109 W. Third Ave.

The discussion is the next in The Valued: Celebrating Our Differences speaker series and will feature the Rev. Tedd Cogar, an advocate for LGBTQIA+ inclusion and support within faith communities.

Cogar will guide attendees through an examination of scripture, focusing on texts historically used both to exclude and to include LGBTQIA+ individuals. Participants are encouraged to bring their own Bibles to explore varying translations and interpretations.

“This session is about learning from one another and embracing respectful dialogue,” Cogar said. “Even when we disagree, it’s essential to create space for understanding and civil discourse. The church has a responsibility to lead by example in demonstrating how real conversations – both in moments of agreement and disagreement – can bring communities closer.”

The presentation is part of the third season of the Valued series, which emphasizes the importance of celebrating diversity and striving for continuous acceptance. The series aims to engage participants in meaningful dialogue about inclusion across all identities, including race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, and more.

Cogar brings years of experience addressing topics such as freedom of speech, ethics, and LGBTQIA+ issues within faith communities. He serves as the Senior Assessment Coordinator & LGBTQIA Support at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, as well as a minister at Luther Chapel in Coral, Zion Lutheran Church in Indiana, Pa., and the Lutheran Campus Ministry at IUP.

The event builds on discussions from last year’s presentation, which explored a Lutheran perspective on societal engagement through Social Statements of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). The Valued series underscores the belief that acceptance is an ongoing journey of understanding, reconciliation, and welcoming all communities.

“It’s about moving forward with a new appreciation for our differences,” Cogar said.
